520 _aAbstract: Introduction: The everyday experiences of mentally ill patients after being discharged from the healthcare settings into the community is highly overlooked, this shows a considerable gap in our understanding of the everyday lives of individuals struggling with mental illness outside traditional healthcare settings. This study investigates the challenges, coping mechanisms, and social support systems encountered by mentally ill individuals. Methodology: This is a hospital based cross-sectional study conducted among 164 clients attending psychiatric clinic at Bugando medical center, Mwanza, Tanzania. Simple random sampling was employed to select participants. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire covering demographics, challenges, coping strategies and role of social support among mentally ill patients and statistical analysis was performed using SPSS version 20. Results: The study revealed significant challenges faced by individuals with mental illness, including high levels of stigmatization (82.6%) and social isolation (82.6%). However, coping mechanisms varied, with community involvement and recreational activities being the most common strategies (28.6% each), while family support was acknowledged by 87.0% of participants as crucial in their coping process. Despite receiving support from family and friends (90.1%), gaps in access to basic needs and economic support were identified. Discussion: The findings highlight various challenges individuals with mental illness face in their daily lives, emphasizing the need for comprehensive support systems that address both psychological and practical needs. The reliance on community and family support also plays a crucial role in their lives. However, the significant stigma and isolation experienced by participants indicate that more targeted interventions are necessary to improve their integration into society. Conclusion: Therefore, addressing the identified challenges and promoting healthier coping strategies are crucial steps toward enhancing mental health outcomes. Future interventions should focus on community education, stigma reduction, and strengthening social support networks to foster an environment conducive to recovery.
