Awareness and adequate knowledge on importance of antenatal care visit is very important as will help improve attendance. Although many studies have been done regarding antenatal visits worldwide, data regarding awareness and knowledge of importance of antenatal care visit before 12 weeks of gestation age are still scarce. This study was therefore aimed at assessing awareness and the knowledge about importance of attending first ANC contact below 12 weeks gestation age among pregnant women attending antenatal care clinic in Moshi district, northern Tanzania. Methodology: A prospective cross sectional hospital based study was conducted using a structured closed ended questionnaire involving pregnant women attending antenatal care clinic at primary health facilities in Moshi district, Tanzania. Simple random sampling was used to select study participants. Data obtained were analyzed using SPSS version 20 Results: This study find that41.7% (86/206) pregnant women had good awareness of the first ANC attendance before 12 weeks gestation age while 120 (58.3%) had poor awareness. Of the 206 pregnant women, only 14 (6.7%) women had good knowledge about importance of first ANC visit before 12 weeks of gestation age as recommended by WHO while 192 (93.3%) women had poor knowledge.
