Non-communicable diseases are chronic conditions that do not result from an infectious process and hence cannot be transmitted from one person to another, and have a prolonged course that do not resolve spontaneously, and for which a complete cure is rarely achieved. Cardiovascular non-communicable diseases are non-communicable diseases, which affect the normal functioning of the heart and the vascular system. Several non-communicable diseases such as those involving the cardiovascular system and diabetes mellitus have commonly been found in the elderly patients leading to a conclusion that advanced age has been a leading risk factor to non-communicable disease and diabetes mellitus. Recently the population of patients admitted with non-communicable diseases has gone high and the large number patients in that category has been observed to be elderly patients. Most of the patients with non-communicable diseases often seek medical attention in the late stages of the diseases, with more than one condition, such that their treatment becomes more complicated since they appear in hospital with the end complications of their diseases which sometimes may even be irreversible or be a cause to another non-communicable disease thus leading to increased burden of non-communicable diseases and admission rates among the elderly patients in the medical wards. OBJECTIVE. The main objective of this study was to determine the prevalence and pattern of cardiovascular non-communicable diseases and diabetes among the elderly admitted at Bugando Medical Centre. METHODOLOGY. This descriptive cross section study was carried out among elderly patients aged sixty years and above admitted in the medical wards at Bugando Medical Centre. Also the cardiovascular non-communicable diseases were the common reason for admission among the elderly patients admitted in the medical wards at BMC. CONCLUSION. The study has revealed the prevalence and pattern of non-communicable cardiovascular diseases and diabetes to be high among the elderly patients at BMC with increasing in the occurrence pattern with advancing age and being the major reason for admission in the medical wards at BMC.
