520 _aAbstract: Background: Cold chain system must be regularly monitored for the guarantee of quality vaccines. The system is responsible for maintaining vaccine at +2’C-+8’C from the manufacturer to the beneficiaries. However, in Mwanza there is limited information regarding knowledge and practices on vaccine handling among health workers. Objectives of this study were to determine knowledge on immunization, vaccine handling practices on immunization among health workers and factors associated with poor vaccine handling practices. Research methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted in health facilities located in Mwanza city, Tanzania. Study population was 87 health workers responsible for cold chain system maintenance selected conveniently from 51 health facilities and prepared questionnaire and checklist were used for data collection. Results: Female formed majority 80 (91.9%) of the participants which about three quarters 65 (74.7%) work in dispensaries with the median experience of 9 (IQR: 5-15) years. Availability of cold chain equipments were satisfactory with exception to deep freezer which was not available in all health facilities. Health workers had good knowledge and good vaccine handling practices per WHO recommendation. Conclusion; The study reveal that cold chain equipments were available and in good state, also high proportion of participants have good level of knowledge on immunization and good vaccine handling practices.
