520 | _aAbstract: Background: Regions around Lake Victoria basin experience high burden of anaemia Community awareness on anaemia and its associated factors is important in enhancing disease control and intervention. This study investigated the awareness of caretakers of children admitted at Bugando medical centre (BMC) and Sekou Toure Regional Hospital (STRH) on anaemia and its associated factors to their children. Methodology: A hospital based descriptive cross sectional study involving 372 caretakers was conducted between August and September 2013 using questionnaire focusing on awareness of anaemia, causes symptoms, prevention methods and anaemia preventive foods to caretakers of children admitted. Analysis to assess awareness of anaemia and its associated factors was archived. Results: A total of 372 caretakers, 92.5% being females responded to the questionnaire. Small scale farmers’ occupation had low awareness 44.4%, p values 0.000. Awareness on symptoms of anaemia p value 0.007 was 44.1% among them. It was found that 36.3% of caretakers were aware that 6months was a time to exclusive breastfeed their children. Awareness on how to complement and when to wean among caretakers was 45.4% and 36.1% respectively, complementing porridge with all groups of nutrients and 13 to 23 months were enough to wean the child. Conclusion: Strategies to raise awareness on anaemia and associated factors should include health promotion and nutritional education for families from all socioeconomic groups. | ||
