Quantification of Brucella SPP Antibodies Titers Among Adult Febrile Patients Sera From Mwanza Tanzania.

It is endemic in many resource limited countries. Most of clinical presentations resemble that of other diseases like malaria which are also endemic in these countries. The routine diagnosis had been challenging due to lack of reliable tests making it difficult to diagnoses active infection due to the fact that presence of Brucella antibodies does not necessarily indicate active infection. Objective: This study aimed at quantifying the Brucella antibodies forms sera of febrile patients who were found to be positive for Brucella spp antibodies. Methodology: The was cross sectional laboratory-based study involving 260 sera from Brucella spp. seropositive febrile patients conducted from May to June 2019. Archived sera from febrile patients collected in different hospitals and health centers in Mwanza were retrieved and analyzed. Quantification of the Brucella titers was done by slide agglutination test as per manufacturer’s instructions (Euro cell A/M® Euromaidan equip LTD. UK. Data was analyzed by STATA version 13 as per study objectives. Results: Median age of enrolled adults febrile patients was 31 (IQR 25-44) years and mean temperature was 37.78 ± 023’C. Among 260 adults febrile patients tested for Brucella antibodies 73(28.08% CI: 22-0.33) were found to have high Brucella antibodies titers. Having big number of family members (OR: 0.88, 95% CI: 0.78-1.00, p=0.03) significantly protected individuals from having high Brucella antibody titters. Conclusion and Recommendations: The prevalence of high Brucella antibody titers among adults febrile patients is high and big number of household members significantly protected individuals from having high Brucella antibody titters. With decrease trend of malaria fever, brucellosis should be considered in routine diagnosis. According to study findings quantification method can be used in routine diagnosis of Brucellosis
