Knowledge of pelvic inflammatory disease and its prevention practices among female undergraduate students of Saint Augustine University in Mwanza, Tanzania.

Abstract:
Background: Pelvic Inflammatory disease (PID) is the infection of a woman’s upper reproductive organs including endometrium, fallopian tubes, ovaries, and pelvic peritoneum which leads to inflammation of these organs arising from the vaginal or cervix to the upper genital tract a condition called endometritis. PID is a major disease of concern especially in sexually active women’s because it can lead to long-term reproductive issues and problems such as infertility, ectopic pregnancy, chronic pelvic pain, cervical cancer, septic abortion, and increased risk of HIV/AIDS infection especially when a genital ulcer is present.
Methodology: This study was a cross-sectional study conducted for a period of one month involving 384 female Saint Augustine University students. Data collected using a standard questionnaire were analyzed using SPSS version 20 and the results were presented inform of figures and tables by frequency and percentages.
Results: Majority of these participants had age ranging from 18-22 who were single studying in first and second years. 199 (51.8%) had good knowledge regarding Pelvic inflammatory disease while 185 (48.2%) had poor level of knowledge regarding PID and its prevention whereby 324 (84.4%) reported using condoms as the prevention practice against Pelvic inflammatory disease and 371 (96.6%) were practicing good hygiene in the process of preventing themselves in the acquiring of Pelvic inflammatory disease.
Conclusion: Female university students at SAUT have good knowledge regarding PID and its prevention practices where furthermore majority of participants were aware of the disease including its complications and effects it causes when infect an individual.
