Prevalence and Histological Pattern of Liver Diseases at Bugando Medical Centre

The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and histological pattern of liver diseases at Bugando Medical Centre, Mwanza, Tanzania Objectives: To determine the prevalence and histological pattern of liver diseases among patients that underwent liver biopsy at BMC. Methodology: This was a retrospective study of all cases of liver biopsies between 2015 and 2022. Data was obtained from the histopathological department at BMC and was analyzed using STATA software version 13. Results: The study showed dominance of HCC in this study is similar to those already established in the previous literature. The results will be presented to the Dean Catholic University of Health and Allied Science (CUHAS). School of medicine for the award of degree in the doctor of medicine (MD), CUHAS library and pathology department at BMC. Discussion: This study aimed at assessing the prevalence and histological pattern of liver disease among all patient who had liver biopsy at BMC hospital from 2015 – 2022 and to characterize its association to various factors. The study shows of all patients admitted at BMC 2015-2022 for liver biopsy most common diagnosis was liver cancer HCC 58.26%. Radiological findings showed evidence of presence of masses in most of patient with large size of liver masses as well as presence of nodules in the liver. Conclusion: The study showed dominance of HCC in this study is similar to those already established in the previous literature, with hepatitis B and C being the most incriminated risk factors due to their endemicity in our environment.
