Knowledge and attitude towards organ donation among undergraduate medical students at Catholic University of Health and Allied Sciences Mwanza, Tanzania

Abstract
Background: Organ transplantation is a significant development in the management of end organ failure that can cause noticeable improvements in the quality of life and life expectancy in patients who are waiting for life-saving organ transplants. The shortage of donors is a worldwide issue and many patients with organ failure die yearly on transplant waiting lists because of this shortage. So this study aims at assessing the level of knowledge and practice towards organ transplantation among undergraduate medical students.
Methodology: This was a cross-sectional study conducted among 291 undergraduate medical students at CUHAS. Data was collected using a structured questionnaire, then entered and cleaned in Microsoft Excel (2013) and then data analysis was done using Statistical Package for Social Sciences Software (SPSS version 20.0) for analysis of the questionnaire response.
Results: Undergraduate medical students at CUHAS had moderate to adequate knowledge towards organ donation, also had positive attitude towards organ donation. 67.9% out of total respondents had adequate knowledge towards organ donation, 29% had moderate knowledge towards organ donation and 3.1% of respondents showed-up to have inadequate knowledge towards organ donation or transplantation.
Conclusion: The level of knowledge regarding organ donation and transplantation among majority of studied undergraduate medical students at CUHAS was adequate/good where also majority of participants about half had positive attitude towards organ donation and transplantation.
