Abstract:
Background: Amoxicillin is an oral semi-synthetic, beta-lactam antibiotic used to treat bacterial infection caused by susceptible microorganisms. It is usually the drug of choice within the class because it is better absorbed following oral administration than other beta-lactam antibiotics. All types of pharmaceutical products have been shown to have counterfeited drugs but existing data suggest that anti-infectious agents particularly antibiotics are the most counterfeited products.
Objective: The main of this study was to determine in vitro quality evolution of amoxicillin suspension available in retail pharmacy at Nyamagana district Mwanza, Tanzania before and after reconstitution.
Methods: Different brands of amoxicillin suspension were bought from different randomly selected pharmacies in Nyamagana district and different laboratory tests were performed. The test for assay was carried out using high performance liquid chromatography as per United States Pharmacopeia. Followed by the PH test which was done by using the PH meter.
Results: Five different brands of amoxicillin suspension were bought of which Z1 had a mean average of 104.2621, relative standard deviation of 6.060136 and the PH of 5.7, Z2 had a mean average of 114.1191, relative standard deviation of 1.820516 and the PH of 5.4, Z3 had a mean average of 107.7284, relative standard deviation of 0.0716323 and the PH of 6.1, Z4 had a mean average of 113.7359, relative standard deviation of 0.1679887 and the PH of 5.0 and Z5 had a mean average of 70 and the PH of 5.2. And all he five brands of amoxicillin suspension were all packed in a well tight container and the crystalline powder did not stick on the walls of the container.
Conclusion: Only one out of five amoxicillin suspension failed the assay test but all passed on the physical characteristics test according to the United States Pharmacopeia.
