Abstract:
Background: Contraception is deliberate use of natural and artificial methods to prevent pregnancy as consequence of sexual intercourse. The global incidence of unplanned pregnancies among university students every year continues to increase despite the high awareness and knowledge on contraceptive methods among students in higher educational institutions. This study aimed to assess contraceptive knowledge, attitude and preference of contraception among undergraduate bachelor student at Catholic University of Health and allied sciences
Methodology: A cross sectional was conducted among undergraduate bachelor degree university students at Catholic University of Health and Allied Sciences. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 20.
Result: A total of 349 participated in this study were 315 completed the survey, the response was 90.25%. Among 315 about 307(97.5%) were having knowledge concerning contraception where the main source of information about 66% were from friends, parents and relative, 68.8% of participant were having positive attitude while 26.6% were having negative attitude. Seventy six percent have ever use modern contraception.
Conclusion: Most of participants had knowledge of contraception. However, the rate of contraceptive use was low. The majority of the respondents were sexually active and started sexual activity at age above eighteen years. Hence, advocacy for adolescent reproductive health education to promote the use of use of the available contraceptive services among university students is needed.
