Abstract:
Background: Malnourished under-fives are at high risk of developing anemia compared to normal population. Anemia among malnourished under-fives is associated with increased morbidity and mortality by 2.62 times compared to malnourished under-fives without anemia. In Africa and Asia about 80% malnourished under-fives admitted in tertiary hospitals are anemic.
Objectives: The aim of this study is to determine prevalence and factors that contributes to anemia among malnourished under-fives admitted at BMC.
Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted from November 2021 to May 2022 at Bugando Medical Centre and referral hospital, Pediatric Malnutrition ward. Research-administered checklist was sent to parents taking care of malnourished under-fives where a total of 180 participants were enrolled into the study and data were analyzed using IBM SPSS version.
Results: In our study prevalence of anemia among malnourished under-fives was reported to be 78.3% with various factors predisposing most importantly Parents education (mother’s education¬), parent’s occupation and family size
Conclusion: The prevalence of anemia among malnourished under-fives is still high and this may be attributed to high incidence of Severe acute malnutrition.
