Knowledge and awareness of patients about HPV vaccination to their adolescent children at Nyamagana District, Mwanza, Tanzania

Abstract:
Background: Cervical cancer is the leading cause of cancer and cancer-related death among Tanzanian women. Each year more than 7,300 Tanzanian women are diagnosed with cervical cancer. More than half of these women die as they are diagnosed at a late stage of the disease when curative treatments are no longer possible. It is important that parents should have good knowledge and awareness about HPV vaccination to their adolescent girls. This study assessed the level of knowledge and awareness of parents about HPV vaccination to their adolescent girls at Nyamagana district.
Objectives of the study: To determine the level of knowledge and awareness of parents about HPV vaccination to their adolescent children at Nyamagana district.
Methodology: Random sampling of parents at Nyamagana district was conducted where a sample of 272 participants were enrolled in the study. Self-administered structured questionnaire containing closed ended questions was used. Data analysis was done using SPPS version 20.
Results: The findings of this study showed a very low level of knowledge and awareness of HPV vaccine among parents in Nyamagana district and very few parents have vaccinated their children against HPV.
Conclusion/recommendation: There is urgent need for the government to increase educational programs through various means such as socio-media, TV, and every public and private institutions so that parents and also adolescents themselves they can have enough information about HPV vaccine so as to increase the rate of vaccinations as it is a very important intervention against cervical cancer.
