Abstract:

Background and objective:The current World Health Organization (WHO) recommended on breastfeeding stipulate that breastfeeding should start immediately following delivery for the baby to get colostrums. The infant should thereafter be exclusively breastfed for up to at least 6 months of life, day and night on child’s demand. This study was to uncover the true picture, pertaining knowledge and attitude towards exclusive breastfeeding among women attending postnatal clinic at Nyamagana hospital.

Methodology: This was a cross section study was used where by a total of 160 mothers were involved. A structured questionnaire was provided to mothers who voluntarily agreed to be interviewed. Data were analyzed using Statistical package for Social Science (SPSS) Version 20.0. Health facilities based study, done Nyamagana Hospital from September to December 2021

Results: A total of 160 women were interviewed whereby majority were between 21 – 30 years 84 ( 52.2%), and majority had primary level of education 62(38.8%), most of interviewed mothers were entrepreneurs 94( 58.8% ). Large number of women believes that EBF is important because the breatsmilk is the safe for child 76(47.5%) so most of them had a plan of exclusively breastfeeding their children for 6 months as seen in 93.1% of them fear of transmitting diseases to their children is the main reason for not exclusively breastfeeding 50(31.3%) and 87(54.4%) will stop to breastfeed their children at age of 20-26 months of the child.
