Abstract:
Background: The frequent use of first line antiretroviral medications such as tenofovir disoproxil fumarate and dolutegravir has been associated with liver and kidney complications. The aim of this study was to assess the renal and liver profiles of HIV infected patients on fixed dose combination of Tenofovir – Lamivudine – Dolutegravir attending at Bugando medical centre outpatient clinic.
Methodology: A hospital based retrospective cross-sectional study that involved retrieving medical records of 370 HIV patients attending at Bugando medical centre outpatient clinic from April 2019 to April 2021.
Results: A total of 400 patients’ medical records were reviewed and each of them represented one patient. Only 349 out of 400 patients’ medical records had complete information where males recorded were 159 (45.56%) and females 190 (54.44%). Patients’ age was classified into two groups, the adults group (18-35 years) and the elderly (above 36). Almost two thirds (213 of 349 patients (61.03%) of the patients on TLD medication were in the 36 years and above group. Only 179 (51.29%) patients were recorded have been married while the remaining 48.71% of the patients were recorded as divorced, widows and single.
Conclusion: In my analysis, the intergrase inhibitor Dolutegravir (DTG) did not cause significant elevations of the liver enzymes ALT and AST. Also my analysis identified studies in Africa that reported statistically significantly significant renal function that was associated with TDF use but its clinical significance compared to the effects it brought was not enough to contraindicate the usage of this ART regimen.
