Abstract:
Background: A diagnosis of cancer places considerable stress on patients and requires them to make major adjustments in many areas of their lives. Consequently, considerable demands are placed on health care providers to satisfy the complex care needs of cancer patients. Patient satisfaction is an important and commonly used indicator for measuring the quality in health care. Patient satisfaction affects clinical outcomes, patient retention, and medical malpractice claims. It affects the timely, efficient, and patient-centred delivery of quality health care. Patient satisfaction is thus a proxy but a very effective indicator to measure the success of doctors and hospitals. Currently, there is little available information to indicate the extent to which cancer patients are satisfied with the quality of care they receive
Method: A qualitative, explorative, descriptive and a contextual study design using a phenomenological approach was used for this study. In-depth interviews (ID) and Focused group discussion (FGD) were conducted with 70 purposefully selected participants from the population of cancer patients. The study was conducted at Bugando Medical Center from February to June 2020. Data analysis was done using content analysis and NVIVO-12 software
Results: This study has revealed that client satisfaction is influenced by various factors, which included facility-related, health workers related, and patient-related factors. These factors could either increase or decrease the level of satisfaction among the patients. Presence of good customer care, availability of health care professionals like doctors and nurses and machine were among the mentioned aspects that increased satisfaction to patients. The presence of socialcultural norms, Lack of knowledge, long waiting time, and high cost of treatment tends to affect the client’s satisfaction negatively.
Conclusion: Cancer participants’ satisfaction with their hospital stay was high, though there is a need for caregivers and the hospital at large to keep improving the health care services to all patients.
