Smartphone activities and addiction among students at the Catholic University of Health and Allied Sciences, Mwanza, Tanzania

Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 357 undergraduate students assessing demographic, pattern of use and substance use. Smartphone addiction was assessed using short version of smartphone addiction scale for adolescents. Data was processed and analyzed using statistical package of social science (SPSS). Categorical variables were exposed in frequency and percentage. Chi-square and cross tabulation were used to test the association between prevalence and demographic data, pattern of use and associated factors. Results: Finding showed that high frequency of smartphone use, as most of students (76.47%) spend over 3 hours daily using their Smartphone. Communication turned out to be most carried out activity on smartphone (96.06%) followed by educational purpose (94.40%), social networking (79.27%) and entertainment (74.23%). The overall 30.81% of participants were addicted to smartphone where by female were more addicted (38.98%) compared to male. Conclusion: The study provide insight into smartphone use, smartphone addiction and pattern of use in University Students which should be extended in further studies.
