Abstract:
Road traffic accidents (RTAs) are of growing public health importance worldwide contributing significantly to the global disease burden. There is still insufficient number of studies done to know the factors associated with motorcycle accidents.
The main objective in this study was to determine the factors associated with motorcycle accidents among commercial motorcyclists in Ilemela municipality, Mwanza, with specific objectives of determining the reported behaviors associated with accidents among commercial motorcyclists, qualifications of a commercial motorcycle rider and assess their knowledge on road signs.
A cross sectional study was conducted in October – November that included the commercial motorcyclists in Ilemela municipality, Mwanza. A structured questionnaire was used to collect information on underlying causes of motorcycle accidents particularly to commercial motorcyclists (90) motorcyclists were interviewed and data was generated using standard questionnaires and analyzed using a computer program SPSS 17.0 software.
The study found out that over speeding (77.8%), alcoholism (64.4%), driver’s negligence (57.8%) and overtaking (53.3%) being most reported reasons for accidents. Reported behaviors were over speeding, overtaking and alcoholism being common behaviors associated with accidents respectively. But when compared to road signs knowledge, over-speeding was significant (X2 17.5084, p<0.0001) as compared to older behaviors. In these findings it was seen that not having knowledge on road signs has an effect on proper road use. Considering all aspects of this study motorcycle accidents have social, economic and political causes.
The study has identified quantitatively that over spending, overtaking and alcoholism are causes of accidents and risk behaviors associated with motorcycle accidents. Poor knowledge on road signs being another cause of accidents. The identified that most riders do not have professional training and most obtain license without training. Also the study identified that few put efforts on knowledge about road use and concentrate on maximizing profit rather than safety on the road.
