Effect of a sedentary lifestyle on health among adults living in Misungwi District, Mwanza, Tanzania

Now days, people move less and sit more, Prolonged sitting is attributed to be the cause of several diseases especially metabolic diseases (obesity, diabetes) and cardiovascular diseases, being sedentary together with other bad activities such as eating junk food, drinking alcohol, smoking causes more severe health problems and with poor prognoses. The aim of this study was to analyze the effects of sedentary lifestyle on health among adults living in Misungwi District. Methodology: Self-administered structured questionnaire was used in a prospective cross-sectional study. Only those who gave informed consent and met inclusion criteria were included in the study. Data was processed and analyzed by using SPSS version 25. Results: A total of 329 adults were interviewed. The high-level overview of the effect of sedentary lifestyle on health among adults were 70%. There was significant association between age, marital status, education level, occupation, screen-based sedentary behavior, physical activities among adults on health, I found that unemployed and young adults tend to sit more and more less as most of their time are based on screen viewing also a higher level of physical activity were associated with better-related quality of life and increased time of sedentary behavior was linked to lower health-related quality of life among adults, relation between physical activity, sedentary behavior and health was suggesting that the less time sedentary the better the health related quality of life. Conclusion: The finding in this study suggest that health education about modifications of lifestyle may contribute to good outcomes on health.
