Prevalence and factors that influence utilization of natural family planning methods among women of child-bearing age in Nyamagana District, Mwanza, Tanzania

Abstract:
Background Information: Family planning as an ability for couples to control the timing and number of their pregnancies play a crucial role in reducing fertility rate when it efficient and effectively implemented worldwide contraceptive prevalence was estimated to be 64% in 2014. In the more developed countries, regional prevalence variations fall within a relatively narrow range, from 69% in Eastern and Southern Europe to 78% in Northern Europe. Among the less developed countries, contraceptive prevalence is lowest in Africa.
Methods: Researcher designed demographic questionnaire and study was a prospective cross sectional with an analytical component. Only those who gave informed consent and met inclusion criteria were included in the study. The data was double entered, cleaned, and both descriptive and inferential analysis done using the statistical package for social sciences (SPSS).
Results: A total of 165 patients were interviewed. The prevalence of 12 (7.3%) reported to be utilizing natural family planning, significance association were found between occupation like employed, age, university education level, marital status, husband support the use of NFP, husband help in selection of NFP, negative altitude customs of community on NFP use, religion allowance on NFP use, and belief in the myth and misconception on use of NFP.
Conclusion and Recommendation: There is low prevalence 7.3% of NFP utilization so that the ministry of health in collaboration with other relevant ministries should developed policies on health education to the community on the importance of natural family planning. Also should be educated on NFP in order that they cannot stop their wives to use NFP and poor believe and customs should be alleviated in the society on the use of NFP in order to improve the health of women.
