Prevalence of Substance Use among Patients attending Psychiatry and Mental Illness Department at Bugando Medical Centre.

Numerous studies have been done in other countries including neighboring Kenya to the North of Tanzania, showing a high rate of substance use among psychiatric patients. Methods: Researcher designed socio demographic questionnaire and study was a descriptive cross sectional with an analytical component. Only those gave informed consent and met inclusion criteria were included in the study. The data was double entered, cleaned, and both descriptive and inferential analysis done using the statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) Results: A total of 136 psychiatric patients were interviewed. The prevalence of 95(69.9%) were reported to use substances where there were more males 71.58% than female 28.42% who also reported to have higher rate of substance use, with the age range of 20-85 years and significant associations were found between level of education, marital status, gender, occupation, residence, religion, family history of mental illness and substance use. Conclusion and Recommendation: There are high prevalence of substance use (69.9%) among psychiatric patients, hence the need to manage the conditions appropriate to improve the quality of life. It is highly recommended that psychiatric national hospitals should put in place a policy on appropriate standard clinical practices to identify substance use in all psychiatric patients.
