Abstract:
Background: Emergency contraception is a method of preventing unwanted pregnancy after unprotected sex or misuse of regular contraception. It is estimated that of the 210 million pregnancies that occur each year 80 million are unintended. Unwanted pregnancies are usually correlated with increased danger of unsafe abortions. Maternal morbidity and mortality. Contraceptive use has been identified as a paramount intervention to minimize the unwanted pregnancies and its related adverse consequences. Evidently, use of family planning methods would possibly prevent 90% of abortions, a fifth of pregnancy-related morbidity and a third of maternal mortalities worldwide. This research therefore, aims at establishing emergency contraceptive knowledge and utilization in particular among the female university students at IRDP.
Objectives: To assess knowledge, attitude and use of emergency contraception among university students as Institute of rural development planning (IRDP) lake zone Centre.
Methods: A cross section-based study involving 464 students at IRDP from October to November 2019. Data was obtained through structured questionnaire and data analysis was done by using SPSS version 25.
Results: Despite 65.2% of respondents who have awareness about EC their general knowledge was very low (1.3%). Also, among all respondents only 40.1% have ever used EC either directly or indirectly way especially in men.
Conclusion: The study shown that to reduce unwanted pregnancy and unsafe abortion among sexual active students who’s their knowledge was low there in need of increase knowledge among them through session.
