Abstract:
Background: Many studies show that Tuberculosis is still a major global health problem despite the development of medical interventions is decades still the mortality and morbidity of this disease shows it to be severe, Tanzania had one of the highest burden of TB in the world with 295 TB cases per 100,000 which has increased from the cases of 2015 according to NTLP, yet assessing knowledge and attitude is critical, especially in the light of epidemiologic shifts in populations at risk for TB. Data on the knowledge and attitude of TB among artisanal small scale gold miners are limited and contradictory.
Objective: The aim of this study is to assess the knowledge and attitude about transmission, risk factors and preventive measures of TB among artisanal small scale gold miners in Misungwi.
Methodology: A cross sectional study design was employed to 121 small scale gold miners found in Shilalo, Ishekela and Mwanangwa in Misungwi district, were open ended questionnaires were distributed and responded to by the participants of the study.
Results: Total of 121 small scale miners were analyzed, scores were set to define for knowledge attitude and preventive practices among the participants, the study shows that 52.9% of the participants had good knowledge, 37.2% has satisfactory knowledge and 9.9% had poor knowledge those found with positive attitude scored 40.5% and negative attitude scored 59.5%.
Conclusion: Most of the participants from this study showed to had good level of knowledge but had a negative attitude about the transmission and risk factors of TB among miners.
