Knowledge and Attitudes towards the Use of Contraceptives among Patients with Abortion Complications Admitted at Sekou-Toure Hospital

Abstracts:
Background information: unplanned pregnancy poses a major public health challenge in women of reproductive age, especially in developing countries. It has been estimated that of the 210 million pregnancies that occur annually worldwide, about 80 million (38%) are unplanned, and 46 million (22%) end in abortion. Those who do not use any contraceptive method may lack access or face barriers to using contraception. These barriers include lack awareness, lack of access, cultural factors, religion, opposition to use by partners or family members, and fear of health risks and side effects of contraceptives.
Method: Using hospital based cross sectional study by using researcher designed questionnaire, this research was assessed knowledge and altitude towards contraceptive use among patients admitted with abortion complication at Sekou Toure regional referral hospital, here the sample size was 195 people and data analyzed by using statistical package for social sciences(SPSS).
Results: A total of 195 patients were interview: the study reported 52.3% FAIR (satisfactory) level of knowledge, followed by 31.3% poor knowledge, 16.4% and excellent level of knowledge, and low patients with positive attitude 33.8% toward contraceptive use among women with abortion complication.
Conclusion and recommendation: these is fair(satisfactory) level of knowledge of patients 52.3%, followed by 31.3% had poor knowledge, and the lowest number 16.4% had excellent level of knowledge, and low patient with positive attitude 33.8%, compared with those with negative attitude 66.2% toward the contraceptive use among women with abortion complication hence, the ministry of education in collaboration with other relevant ministries should develop policies on health education to the community on the importance of contraceptive use.
