Abstract:
Background: ESBL bacteria are gram negative bacteria that produce an enzyme, beta-lactamase enzyme that had ability to break down drugs such as penicilins and cephalosporins which render them ineffective to treatment hence causing multidrug resistance (1). Multiple drug resistance has become a public health threat which result in increased hospital stay, increased cost of health care, increased morbidity and mortality (2). Improper use of antibiotics has accelerated the resistance to human and animals due to improper prescription by unqualified personnel together with poor diagnosis. Due to scarcity of information this study was intended to determine the prevalence of MDR bacteria which were ESBLs producing bacteria in household of people with UTIs in Sengerema district.
Objectives: This study aims to analyze the prevalence of ESBL bacteria in household of confirmed cases with UTIs, the result obtained from this study might be helpful in formulating health polices which might be helpful in health care provision and Pharmacists on proper prescription of drugs.
Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted from April 2019 to July 2019 on environmental samples (swabs) and animal rectal swab were collected from households of outpatients confirmed with UTI, the swabs were inoculated on MCA supplemented with cefotaxime and incubated for 18 to 24 hours pure colonies were sub cultured on MCA supplemented with Cefotaxime, and then store. Biochemical identification tests like Triple Sugar Iron (TSI), urease, citrate, Sulphur Indole motility (SIM) will be done so as to identify which type of organism (Bacteria) have been isolated.
The result were recorded in log book then transferred in excel sheet for coding and cleaning then analyzed using STATA version 13. Categorical results were presented into percentages/fractions while continuous data were presented into mean (+/-SD) or median (IQR). Chi2 or Fisher’s exact was used to show the prevalence of multidrug resistance in environment of people with symptomatic UTI
