Abstract:
Aim: the study was set out to determine how urgently the initiation of ARTs to inpatient is done.
Materials and Methods: a prospective study was done at Bugando Medical Center, Mwanza from 23rd August to 3rd October, 2011.
Results: among the 93 patients enrolled in the study, 68(73.1%) were known IDS Patients, while the rest 25 (26.9%) were newly diagnosed. Among the known IDS Patients, 42(61.7) were not on ARTs. During the course of their stay at hospital, 32(62.7%) of the patients who were not on ARTs on admission, were started on medications.
Conclusion: although it is known that initiation of ARTs have better outcome to patients, similar to other studies, this research found that a big percentage, were not on ARTs. It was also observed that there was a delay in inpatients initiation of ARTs.
