Stroke is a syndrome of focal neurologic deficit that develops suddenly and lasts more than 24 hours in a person with no history of recent head injury. If less than 24 hours, it is called a transient ischemic attack (TIA). Strokes can be categorized as ischemic (embolic or thrombotic) or hemorrhagic (intracerebral or subarachnoid). Main risk factors for stroke in Africa are hypertension which is a major leading cause, diabetic mellitus, hypercholesterolemia, smoking, atrial fibrillation, rheumatic heart disease, sickle cell anemia, and HIV.
