Abstract:
Introduction: ART discovery in early 1990s has increased expectancy to HIV positive patients by reducing opportunistic infection, though the long of ART to these patients has been associated with increment in non-communicable diseases like hypertension. This study focused on prevalence, knowledge, and management HTN in HIV positive patients on ART for more than 3 years.
Methodology: Hospital based retrospective follow up study was done among HIV positive patients who were on ART for more than 2 years from 2012 to 2016. The aim was to find the incidence of HTN in inpatients who are on long term use of ART. This was done at CTC of Bugando medical centre in Mwanza.
Data collection was done through phones calls, files and meeting with patients on clinic days by a researcher using questionnaires that contained questions on ART adherence, HTN screening and diagnosis in four years. A total of 237 patients were located and data entry and analysis was done through STATA program.
Results: Among the 237 patients located, 8 had died and 21 were lost to follow-up. The remaining 208 were contacted outcomes. Among these patients, the median age was 40 years and 72% were female. The reported prevalence of HTN was found to be 6.3% different from the previous research reported elsewhere. 7.6% of patients are not aware of HTN and do not know about screening for HTN. Most of the patients (97.1%) have a good adherence to ART medication.
