Abstract:
Background: Diarrhoea is a major public health problem of developmental concern with both health and socioeconomic consequences. It is the second leading cause of death in children under five years, high prevalence being in developing countries.
Objective: To determine the prevalence of diarrhoea and the associated factors among under five children at Mugana designated district hospital.
Material and method: A cross-sectional hospital based study was conducted at Mugana DDH among under five children seen both as outpatients and inpatients. Standardized structured questionnaires were used to obtain demographic information and such factors as immunization status, breastfeeding practices, hygiene and nutrition status.
Results: A total of 200 children were enrolled into the study. The overall prevalence was 47%. Diarrhoea was associated with such factors as malnutrition, ceasing breastfeeding at less than 6 months, hand washing without soap and incomplete immunization.
Conclusion: Exclusive breastfeeding, continued breastfeeding to at least 2 years, good nutrition, hand washing with soap and completion of immunization have to be addressed in order to decrease risk of diarrhoea disease.
