Prevalence of Dysmenorrhea and its Management Among Undergraduate Female Students in Nyamagana - Mwanza.

Regardless of the effect on daily activities, few women with dysmenorrhea seek treatment as they believe it would not help. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and management options for dysmenorrhea among undergraduate in Nyamagana district in Mwanza Methodology: A cross sectional study was conducted to collect data on prevalence of dysmenorrhea and management options among 294 undergraduate females from CBE, SAUT and CUHAS in Nyamagana district. A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data with the help of class and students’ leaders. Data collected were analyzed using SPSS Version 20 and were presented in tables reporting percentages. Statistical significant tests were conducted using chi-square. Results and Discussion: The prevalence of dysmenorrhea was 78.2% with 155 (67.4%) females took medication as a measure to relieve pain out of which 153 were hospital medications. A high proportion 124 (81%) being oral medication, the most used drugs were Diclofenac and ibuprofen. Finding revealed a statistically significant relationship between family history and the prevalence of dysmenorrhea. Conclusion: High proportion of female undergraduate students in Mwanza city have dysmenorrhea with a large number using oral medications for management of dysmenorrhea without consulting health care providers. Reproductive Health education should be enhanced among females to increase awareness and care seeking.
