Proportion of Women Utilizing Black Peppers and Their Perception Towards Increasing Milk Secretion Among Women Attending Postnatal Clinic at Makongoro Health Centre in Mwanza, Tanzania

Objectives: To determine prevalence of black pepper utilization, factors associated with black pepper utilization and perception on the use of black pepper by nursing mothers towards increase milk secretion. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted at Makongoro health center’s postnatal clinic in Nyamagana district, Mwanza city, Tanzania. A structured Swahili questionnaire was used to collect information from 384 nursing mothers attending postnatal clinic during period of study by utilizing personal interview method. Statistical analysis: Socio-demographic profile frequency percentage distribution, proportion and prevalence of black pepper utilization, and statistical associations were analyzed by using Chi-square test in STATA version 13. Results: Out of 384 nursing mothers, 338 were using black pepper during postnatal period with the prevalence of 88%. Statistical association existed between age, religion, marital status and birth order (p<0.001, p<0.016, p<0.006, and p<0.004) respectively. Conclusion: Utilization of black pepper by nursing mothers during postnatal periods increases milk secretion. Recommendation: It’s beneficial to utilize black pepper during postnatal periods in order to increase breast milk secretion hence promoting proper growth of newborns. Experimental studies should be conducted to mechanism through which black pepper acts and existence of any potential adverse effects.
