Awareness of Elderly on Implementation of Provision of Free Health Care Services According to the National Policy of Ageing at Kahama District, Shinyanga.

Abstract:
Background: Ageing is commonly accompanied by different morbid conditions such as HTN, heart failure, eye problems, DM, depression and BPH in male, thus the Tanzania national policy of ageing was introduced to provide free health care services to elders above 60 years, to ensure that health personnel receive special training on how to handle older people, to establish mechanism for follow up on older people’s health and mechanism for awareness creation to older people on HIV/AIDS pandemic and care of its victims and to ensure that older people and the public in general are sensitized on old age health related problems.
Rationale: Bringing about improvement on implementation of provision of free health services to elderly by enabling MoHCDGEC to know key intervention areas.
Objectives: To know the extent of awareness of elderly on implementation of provision of free health services and the inhibiting factors at Kahama district, Shinyanga.
Methodology: Cross sectional study was done at Kahama district hospital and community based study at Mwendakulima and Sangilwa villages, 155 elders participated, data was obtained via structured questionnaires. Obtained data was analyzed by SPSS version 20, descriptive statistics was summarized using frequency and percentage and obtained results were presented in tables and figures.
Results: Majority of elderly 83.9% were aware of existence of the policy and remaining few 16.1% were not. 74.8% had already been exempted and majority 98.7% thought that the policy was necessary. A few, particularly those from rural areas were not yet exempted.
Conclusion: Majority of elders were aware of the free services provided, however these were from urban areas, from the villages had no knowledge. Health facilities were few and far, geriatric drugs were not enough and trained health workers were lacking.
