Abstract:
Introduction: Antibiotics are chemical substances produced by micro-organism and care capable of killing or inhibiting growth of other micro-organisms. General dental practitioners (GDP) prescribe antibiotics for prophylactic and therapeutic purposes.
Objectives: Was to determine the prescribing pattern of antibiotics in post dental procedure patients by determining type of antibiotics, their doses and type of dental procedure in which antibiotics are prescribed.
Methodology: This study was retrospective hospital based by retrieving patient files attended BMC-Mwanza, Tanzania for dental procedure in 2016 January to December.
Results & Discussion: Out of 355 participants who had dental procedure 182 (51.55%) were female as 48.45% for men. Most presented procedure in this study was tooth extraction (50.42%). Generally prescription rate of antibiotics was found to be 247/355 (69.58%). The prescription rate determined by our study was low compared to other studies done in South Africa (81%) and India (86%) but comparable to a study done in Nigeria (65.5%).
Conclusion & Recommendation: Ideally antibiotics should be prescribed after results of culture and sensitivity have been obtained. Further studies to be done on the assessment of factors influencing antibiotic prescription in patients undergoing dental procedures.
