Diabetes patients are already at higher risk of developing liver disease due to the metabolic abnormalities associated with diabetes and the presence of hepatitis B virus further exacerbates this risk. Objectives: This study aimed to determine the prevalence and associated factors of hepatitis B virus among diabetic patients attending health facilities in rural areas of Mwanza. Methodology: A Cross-sectional study involving 296 patients was conducted from April to June, 2024 at Sengerema designated district hospital in Mwanza. Participants’ demographic information and their medical history were collected by using structured pretested data collection tool. About 3-5ml of blood sample for each participant were collected in a plain tube followed by serum extraction. Detection of hepatitis B surface antigen was done using lateral flow assay (Kas Biotech limited, Tanzania) Data analysis was done using STATA version 15 software. Results: Out of 296 known sample of diabetic patients, majority were male 161(54.39%). The overall prevalence in this study was 5.4% (16/296) and unprotected sexual practice and having more than one sexual partner were significantly associated with hepatitis B infection. Conclusion and Recommendations: This study report the intermediate endemicity of hepatitis B virus among diabetic patients, unprotected sexual practice and having more than one sexual partner were significantly associated with hepatitis B infection. Appropriate measures of screen diabetic patients and health education about Hepatitis should be emphasized in this population ER -
