Abstract:

Background: Tonsillitis refers to inflammation of the pharyngeal tonsil and most often occur in children. Recurrent tonsilitis is defined as more than seven attacks within one year, more than five attacks a year within a two-year period, or more than three attack a year within a three-year period. The globally incidence and prevalence of tonsilitis are not completely known, the research indicates that 15-30% sore throat in children and 5-10% sore throat in adult are bacterial tonsillitis

Method: study included384 parents/guardians of pediatric patients with tonsillitis who admitted or attended at ENT department at BMC. All parents who had their children with tonsillitis was contacted physically and consent for their participation on the study. A well-constructed, self-administered questionnaire was distributed to all participants

Results: The study revealed that parental of paediatric patient who undergoing tonsillectomy express good knowledge regarding the complication of recurrent tonsilitis which include about 81.3% of the study population ,were 322 (83.6%) of them reported that child could suffer obstructive sleep apnoea, This study reveal that the level of education of the parent of the paediatric patient who are scheduled to undergo tonsillectomy has great impact on awareness of post tonsillectomy complication where most of parent with higher level of education were able to ascertain some complication that could happen after surgery where most of the were able to ascertain post operative pain , and post operative bleeding

Conclusion: Considerable proportion of parents /guardians of children scheduled to undergo tonsillectomy at bugando medical centre had poor knowledge regarding the post operative complication however most of parent attending at ENT department at bugando medical centre are very aware on the complication of recurrent tonsilitis to the child health as many of them were able to ascertain that recurrent tonsilitis can cause obstructive sleep apnoea despite of having different levels of education
