Abstract:

Background: Malaria is a major public health problem in Tanzania, with high prevalence rates in many parts of the country, especially among pregnant women. Placental malaria is a severe form of malaria that occurs during pregnancy, and it can have serious consequences for both the mother and the baby. Placental malaria is associated with maternal anemia, low birth weight, preterm delivery, and stillbirth. Therefore, this study determined the prevalence and associated factors of placental malaria at BMC.

Methodology: This was a hospital based cross-sectional study conducted between April and July 2023. Random sampling was done to obtain the study participants. A total of 101 placental blood samples was collected at Bugando Medical Centre. Placental blood was collected in EDTA tubes for plasmodium parasite detection by malaria rapid diagnostic test and malaria blood smear by staining with giemsa stain
