Abstract:

Introduction: Genital herpes is common sexually transmitted infection with high morbidity and increased risk for Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) transmission among sexually active women. Despite presence of antiviral medications, genital herpes is still reported in many low and middle income countries (LMICs) including Tanzania. Currently there is limited epidemiological information regarding the magnitude of active herpes simplex infection among women of reproductive age in many LMICs hindering efforts to its control. The study aimed at determining serum IgM antibodies for herpes simplex infection (HSV) and associated factors among HIV and non HIV women attending Gynecological clinics at Bugando Medical Centre (BMC) Mwanza, Tanzania.

Methodology: A cross sectional study involving 150 aged 18 and 49 years attending Gynecological clinic at Bugando medical center from July to August, 2022 was conducted. Structured questionnaire were used to collect participant’s information. Blood samples were collected, and Immunochromatographic rapid test were used to detect HSV IgM antibodies. Data were analyzed by SPSS version 20.

Result: The mean age of enrolled participants was 34[±7.8] years. Majority of the participants 61(40.7%) enrolled in this study were from Nyamagana while most of them 116(77.3%) were HIV negative. Overall non-of participants was HSV-1 and HSV-2 IgM seropositive.

Conclusions: In the current study non-of the enrolled participant was found to have active HSV infection which calls for further studies in this area for monitoring purposes.
