ABSTRACT:

Background: Ocular steroids drugs, refers to the ophthalmic drug contain corticosteroid for the treatment of ocular diseases Steroids are invaluable agents in the treatment of a diverse spectrum of disorders; however, their use is not without risks (1).inappropriate steroid use is the fourth leading risk factor for causing preventable ocular blindness in the world and account for 4.7% of all cataract extraction that affect 20 million people approximately worldwide.

Aim: to determine knowledge and dispense practice of ocular steroid among pharmaceutical dispensers.

Methodology: A community pharmacy based cross section study conducted between April and May 2022, sample size was obtained using Yamane taro formula (1967). Then data was transferred to social software (SPSS) for data analysis and then presented by using pie chart and table.

Results: A total of 74 pharmaceutical dispensers participated in the study such that majority of participants 55(74.3%) had inadequate knowledge towards ocular steroids while 70(94.6%) had poor dispense practice towards ocular steroids.

Discussion: in this study, about 94.6% of participant’s demonstrated poor dispense practice and appeared to be higher than previous study. Also, it found that majority of participants about 74.3% had inadequate knowledge towards ocular steroids this difference is due to difference in study setting and study population.

Conclusion: Most of the pharmaceutical dispensers in Nyamagana had inadequate knowledge on ocular steroids with poor dispense practice.
