Prevalence of anemia and associated risk factors among pregnant women attending Antenatal Care at Nyamagana District, Mwanza, Tanzania

<br/><br/> Abstract:<br/><br/>Background: Anemia is a global public health problem affecting both developing and developed countries; approximately 1.3 billion individuals suffer from it. Pregnant women are the most vulnerable groups to anemia. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence and risk factors anemia in pregnant women attending antenatal care in Nyamagana.<br/><br/>Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted at Makongoro Hospital in Mwanza city among pregnant women attending antenatal care in December 2020. Convenient sampling used to select participants and data collected using structured questionnaires. Data was analyzed using SPSS software version 20<br/><br/>Results: The age of 367 participants (96% of the estimated sample size) ranged from 14-46 with mean age of 28.6 (SD 6.75) years. Out of 367 pregnant women 113/367 (30.8%) had mild anemia, 53/367 (14.4%) moderate anemia and (25/367) severe anemia. Overall prevalence of anemia was 191/367 (52%).<br/><br/>Conclusion: Anemia in pregnancy was a severe public health problem in Nyamagana district. And the main risk factors were found to be socio demographic variable like maternal age, economic status. However, the use of iron/folic acid supplements early as possible found decrease the risk of anemia.<br/>
