Abstract:

Background: Cervical cancer is the most common cancer and the leading cause of cancer death among women in Tanzania. Knowledge of and willingness to receive a cervical cancer screening are important determinants of prevention. This study aim to describe women’s awareness of cervical cancer and associated risk factors among adult women patients attending outpatient department in Bugando medical centre.

Methodology: This was a cross sectional study that was conducted at Bugando medical centre from adult women patients who were attending outpatient department by interviewing them using structured questionnaires in Swahili version, fill in the questionnaires, then transferred them to the SPSS computer program where analysis was done.

Results: Respondents exhibited a moderate knowledge of cervical cancer. The response about awareness on cervical cancer, 93 (61.6%) had moderate awareness on risk factors, and (56.3%) had moderate awareness on symptoms for cervical cancer.

Conclusion: The level of awareness on cervical cancer was moderate among respondents.
