N2  - Abstract:

Background: There was a concern on adolescent pregnancies and health consequences among secondary school students who lack experience on reproductive health issue including family planning methods. Secondary school students were at risk of getting unintentional pregnancy as they belong to the adolescent group.

Methodology: A cross sectional descriptive analytical study was done where by a total of 250 students were involved from three different secondary school at Pamba ward in Nyamagana district. The information were obtained using structured questionnaire in Swahili. SPSS computer program for analysis of the results was used.

Result: Majority of students knew male condom as the only contraceptive method as proposed (76%) students while 24% knew more than one method. Lack of knowledge on the contraceptive method was leading factor against their use as revealed by 220 students (88.0%). Majority of students account for 84% of study population had knowledge on effects of adolescent pregnancies and the leading factors contributing to adolescent pregnancies were girl’s deprivation of education (96.0%), poverty (92%) and lack of reproductive health knowledge (88.0%).

Conclusion: In this study, majority 76% of students know as male condom is the only contraceptive method. The leading risks seemed to be the leading contributing to adolescent pregnancies were girls’ deprivation of education on reproductive health promotion in this group is of community important in order to enable them to protect themselves from unintentional pregnancy during adolescent.
