Pharmaceutical quality evaluation of Metformin tablets - Mwanza, Tanzania: Catholic University of Health and Allied Sciences CUHAS - Bugando 2020 - 18 Pages Includes References and Appendices

Abstract:

Background: Metformia is a biguanide, antidiabetic agent that reducing blood glucose levels and improves insulin sensitivity. It is used in treatment of type 2 diabetes. In Tanzania, it had been listed in the national essential medicines list of anti-diabetes.

Aim: To evaluate quality of different brands of metformin hydrochloride 500mg tablets.

Methodology: The study was laboratory based analytical and experimental study in which four quality parameters of six different brands of metformin hydrochloride 500mg tablets were assessed.

Results and discussion: According to BP specifications, all samples passed all quality tests. But the test results of this study have revealed abnormal values in percentage weight loss in all six brands of metformin hydrochloride 500mg tablets.

Conclusion: The results showed that all six brands passed all the quality tests performed according to BP, henceforth, they are of acceptable quality.
