Background: Open reduction and internal fixation of fractures with implants and prosthesis has become the first line in management of fractures in most trauma centers. Post-operative wound infections are accompanied by significant morbidity, cost and mortality.
Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and factors associated with infected implant in orthopedic surgery department at Bugando Medical Centre-Mwanza.
Method: This was a Prospective study conducted in a period of two month at BMC in Mwanza from August to November 2019. 77 patients who had ORIF were recruited who fulfilled a set of inclusion criteria. POWI was diagnosed based on clinical presentation, examination and culture of the specimen, determination of the relationship between outcomes and exposure variable was done using Chi-Square test.
Results: Out of 77 study participants (2 (2.6%) had surgical site infection and the organism’s isolates were Pseudomonas aeruginosa from both cases. Presence of co-morbid conditions like HIV, DM, Hypertension and prolonged steroid use was a predictor associated with P-value=0.003
Conclusion: The prevalence of SSI (infected implant) in orthopedic surgery at BMC is 2.6% and the micro-organism isolates is Pseudomonas aureginosa in all SSI cases. Presence of co-morbid conditions was a significant factor for SSI.
