Background Information: Acne vulgaris is a common disorder involving and inflammation of pilosebaceous unit, affecting approximately 85% of persons 12 to 55 years of age. Globally, acne ranks 8th in overall disease. After puberty acne persists into the 20s and 30s in around 64% and 43% of individuals, respectively. The heritability of acne is almost 80% in first degree relatives. Acne occurs earlier and is more severe in those with a positive family history.
Methodology: The study was conducted at CUHAS-Bugando among students with acne vulgaris. The study was descriptive cross sectional and 400 sample was collected randomly using Universal Acne-QoL questionnaire and entry in SPSS then analyzed using global acne severity score.
Results: The results showed 57%, 26% and 17% of students with acne vulgaris has good, moderate and poor quality of life respectively. There is no significant association for quality of life among student with acne vulgaris for age and sex with their P value of 0.379 and 0.676 respectively.
Discussion: Acne usually affects the face which is the first thing to be noticed in a person. The psychological effects of acne can be profound, and persons with acne are at risk for substantial, negative effects on quality of life.
Conclusion: Acne vulgaris has the effects on quality of life among students which can impair their academic performance and confident in interacting with others. In this study 17% of students with acne vulgaris has poor quality of life. Care of acne should include attention on the quality of life as well a clinical treatment of the patient.
