Abstract:

Background and Objectives: Cosmetics are the substances or the products used to enhance the appearance or odor of an individual. Cosmetics and toiletries are widely used among the local in our communities. One of the challenges facing the present generation in the caring of the body’s health over the use of cosmetics containing chemical ingredients classified as toxic and their use have increased exponentially among the present generation. This study aimed to find out the knowledge attitude and behavior towards cosmetic beauty products uses and their harmful effect at Nyamagana district, Mwanza Tanzania.

Methodology: The study was cross sectional descriptive study done in Mwanza, Tanzania. Data were collected using questionnaires, interviews and analyzed using SPSS Statistic 20 software, and was processed and analyzed by sorting them according to the viewed data.

Results: A total of 250 individuals were interviewed, 32.4% were males and 67.6% were female. The mean age of 30.5 (26-35) years, Majority (84.6%) reported the use of cosmetics. The results have shown (34.8%) had very low knowledge about cosmetic use had their harmful effect, (34.0%) had average knowledge and (12.8% had not aware at all but (16.0%) have shown good awareness of cosmetic use and their harmful effect. Also (13.6%) considered smell of the product before buying it, (22.4%) considered ingredient, (32.4%) considered expired date, (6.8%) because it widely used, (17.6%) considered price, (2.8%) considered effectiveness of the product and (4.4%) reported not to be influenced by anything before buy the product. Regarding the side of using cosmetics beauty products, (68.8%) reported not experienced any side effect after applying the cosmetics, (13.6%) experience skin irritation, (5.2%) experience skin burning, (7.2%) experience skin itch and (5.2%) experience eyes irritation when exposed to sum.

Conclusion: Therefore, the government and the community as well should direct more effort to advocate the safety use of cosmetic beauty product before the purchase and the use of the product.
