Honey is a natural substance produced by bees from nectar. Several evidence based health benefits have been ascribed to honey on Diabetes mellitus in recent years. However it is widely known to public that honey is detrimental to diabetics due to its sugar content. There were rumors that there are diabetics who use honey despite their diabetic condition, however their proportion was not known. There were no research what so over in Tanzania done to determine effects of honey on blood glucose level of Diabetic patients. Methodology: A cross sectional study was conducted involving attending diabetic clinics in Mwanza from May 2019 to June 2019. The study included patients aged 15-17 years. Data were collected using structured questionnaire. Fast blood glucose levels were obtained through testing by blood glucose meters. The data collected were analyzed using SPSS 20. Chi square or fisher’s exact tests were used to determine association between use of honey and blood glucose control level. Results and Discussion: A total of 162 (males; 74, females; 88) diabetics with median age of 48 years (IQR: 48-58) participated in this study. 22 out 162 (13.6%) were found to be users of honey were; increase in age (P-value=0.02), Marital status (P-value=0.001) where the married were highly associated, Sulphonylures + metformin regimen (P-value=0.002), and Type II diabetes (P-value=0.04). Blood glucose control among diabetics of same medication regimen was associated to the use of honey (P-value=0.008), where there was higher proportion of controlled BGL in diabetics’ honey users. Conclusion: In this study several findings have been highlighted that shows that why there are some diabetics who use honey, and association of honey and blood glucose level control. ER -
