Introduction: Ciprofloxacin is a first generation fluoroquinolones which is effective against both gram negative and gram positive bacteria. It effective against Enterobacter spp, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Neisseria meningitides, Salmonella, Shigella dysenteriae, Chlaymdia trachomatis, Campylobacter jejuni and many others. In Tanzania ciprofloxacin is indicated for treatment of typhoid fever and urinary tract infection.
Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the quality of different registered brands of ciprofloxacin tablets in Ilemela and Nyamagana districts in Mwanza city.
Methodology: In vitro quality test done were hardness, weight variation, dissolution, assay test which were done in Tanzania medical devices and drugs authority laboratories Dar es Salaam to assess the quality of six brands of ciprofloxacin tablets.
Results and discussion: The results obtained showed that one out of the six brands failed the assay test according to the specification of British pharmacopeia (2018). All other complied to other test done according to the specification of British pharmacopeia (2018).
Conclusion: The results that only one brand failed assay test according to standard British pharmacopeia but according to united states pharmacopeia standard the drug passed the test so in conclusion all the drug assessed passed all the test hence they are of acceptable quality.
