Prevalence and Associated Factors of Hyperuricemia Among Type2 Diabetes Mellitus Patients at Bugando Medical Centre - Mwanza, Tanzania: Catholic University of Health and Allied Sciences [CUHAS – Bugando] : ©2019 - vii; 21 Pages Includes References

Abstract:

Background: Type2 diabetes is the type of diabetes in which the beta cells of the pancreas produce insulin but the body is unable to use it effectively because body cells are resistant to the action of insulin. Some risk factors of type2 diabetes mellitus such as higher BMI above healthy weight, alcoholism, smoking and life style also contribute to increased risk of hyperuricemia. Due to limited data about the prevalence of hyperuricemia among type2 diabetes patients at Bugando medical centre, information from this study will help in management of complications which may result due to increase in uric acid levels in the body.

Methodology: This was a cross sectional hospital based which was done for three months (May – July). Patients were measured weight and height, and about 5mls of blood was collected aseptically and kept in red top tubes containing no additives. Samples were processed within two hours of collection, if there was delay in processing, sample was stored in B1 laboratory refrigerators at -40’C. Results were recorded in log book then transferred in excel sheet for coding and cleaning then analyzed using STATA version 13 as per study objectives.

Results: A total of 315 diabetic patients with median age of 55 years (41-67 years) were enrolled. Among these 163 (51.75%) were males and 152 (48.25%) were females. 94 (29.84%) had health weight, 104 (33.02%) had overweight (p=0.001), 86 (27.03%) had medium obese and 28 (8.89%) had severe obese, 133 (42.22%) were alcohol drinkers (p=0.003), 26 (8.25%) had kidney diseases (p=0.001), 219 (69.52%) had normal uric acid levels, and 87 (27.62%) had hyperuricemia.

Conclusion: The results of this study concludes that there is high prevalence of hyperuricemia type2 diabetes mellitus patients at Bugando medical centre, uric acid abnormalities are associated with BMI category, alcohol drinking, and kidney diseases, other factors such as age, sex, marital status, smoking, and residence were not associated with uric acid levels. Physicians should therefore screen diabetic patients for uric acid levels.
