Antipsychotic patterns vary worldwide hence their prescription require caution and strict monitoring as associated with extra pyramidal side effects. Methods: hospital based retrospective study conducted at Bugando Medical Center. A total of 311 patients file records reviewed by systemic random selection. Data analyzed using Microsoft excel database and SPSS software. Sample population was all files of patients in the psychiatry department from January 2015 December. Results: a total of 311 files were studied out of which there was higher incidence of psychiatry illness in male(60.1%), age group of 21-40 years (67.9%) reported for majority of all psychiatric disorders, average number of antipsychotics prescribed per encounter was 2.46.typical antipsychotics commonly prescribed was chlorpromazine (64.4%), common conditions treated was schizophrenia (26.4%). Oral route of administration was preferred (71.4%). Discussion: typical antipsychotics were prescribed, chlorpromazine (64.4%) being commonest, contrary to study done in India where atypical antipsychotics prescribed, olanzapine being (75.1%) commonest. Hence BMC lack access to atypical antipsychotics due to high cost. Most common condition treated was schizophrenia (26.4%), findings of which are similar to studies performed in Assam, India whereby most common condition was schizophrenia (41.93%). Conclusion: to conclude, the study showed that typical antipsychotics were most common drugs prescribed in patients with psychotic illness and was in accordance with the treatment done in our country. Chlorpromazine was the most common medication used. Common condition treated was schizophrenia ER -
