Introduction: Anxiety is the one of the co-morbidities that are often overlooked when treating patients with acquired immune deficiency syndrome from human immunodeficiency virus (HIV/AIDS), anxiety among those that have recently been diagnosed with, HIV/AIDS has been shown to be more prevalent among patient with stress or excess social stigma related to their diagnosis. Specific prevalence of anxiety is difficult to identify as a result of the wide variation across the globe, ranging from 7% to 82.3%.
Objective: Aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of anxiety disorders among people living with HIV/AIDS attending CTC at Bugando medical centre Mwanza Tanzania.
Methodology: A cross-section study was conducted, among 265 people living with HIV/AIDS attending CTC clinic at Bugando medical centre. Face to face questionnaire will be used to obtained data. Obtained data was analyzed by computer using SPSS program.
Results: Among these 196 participants, 170 (86.7%) had low anxiety, 23 (11.7%) had moderate anxiety and 3 (1.5%) had potential concerning level of anxiety.
Conclusion: The prevalence of anxiety disorders is low (1.5%) among people living with HIV/AIDS attending CTC at Bugando medical centre, may be due to the fact that these people get anxiety disorders soon after being diagnosed to have HIV/AIDS, but after they get effective counseling special care, clinical follow up together with the start of ART and the natural history of HIV/AIDS possibly these people tend to adapt and accept their condition so they do tend to have no or low level of anxiety disorders.
